A federal government funding bill until Dec. 16 was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday, avoiding a shameful partial shutdown less than six weeks before the midterm elections, when congressional control is threatened.
Details
As state funding for federal agencies expires at midnight, House lawmakers sent the law to the White House, where President Joe Biden signed the law into law.
According to The New York Times, the bill contains:
- $4.5 billion in economic assistance to support the work of the Ukrainian government;
- $3 billion in military support for Ukraine, including military training, supplies of weapons and equipment, and logistics;
- $2.8 billion for U.S. military operations in Europe, including mission support, intelligence operations, military service fees, and equipment purchases;
- $1.5 billion to fill U.S. own military stockpiles, which have declined due to supplies to Ukraine;
- $0.5 billion to produce critical weapons to replace those sent to Ukraine.
The bill, which includes an additional $12.3 billion in Ukraine’s military effort against the Russian invasion, was passed by the 100-seat Senate on Thursday with the support of both parties. But he faced opposition in the Republican House of Representatives, including party leader Kevin McCarthy, and fewer than a dozen Republicans joined all the Democrats present in approving Bill 226 to 200.
