The United States and Canada on Friday also expressed support for Ukraine’s membership in NATO, but refrained from vowing to expedite its adoption.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday that Ukraine was applying “under an accelerated procedure” for membership in the defense alliance.
Regarding today’s proposal by the President to expedite the adoption of Ukraine, Blinken said that “there is a process for this, and countries will continue to follow this process.”
According to NATO rules, any decision to accept a new member must be unanimous.
Hungary has been particularly active in the past against Ukraine’s adoption, but other European Allies have also been slow to invite a war-at-war country into its ranks, which would oblige the Alliance to stand up for it.

The Baltic Foreign Ministers, Urmas Reinsalu, Edgars Rinkevichs and Gabrielius Landsbergis welcomed Ukraine’s imminent accession to NATO.
