While performing a combat mission in an air battle, Colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Matyushenko Mykhailo Yuriiovych died heroically defending the country’s sky (08.01.1961-26.06.2022). He was from Bucha and died in the sky over the Black Sea.
The military pilot flew many types of military and civilian aircraft. He served in various military units, before the war he worked as the head of one of the Ukrainian airlines.
“He was a successful person and never bragged about what he really did. Having an active civil position, he headed the public formation of law enforcement. Mykhailo Matyushenko, the call sign “Grandfather”, passed on his invaluable work experience to the younger generation. And only now we have the right to tell the truth: the “Ghost of Kiev” was headed by a pilot from Bucha. With the arrival of Colonel Matyushenko to the leadership of the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade, there were no losses in the air. This means that all the pilots from the Kyiv Ghosts returned alive,” Fedoruk said.
“One night, Grandfather rushed into an air battle on the L-39, simulating a MiG-29 attack on a pair of Su-30s. And what do you think? They retreated!” the fellows recall one of the episodes.
Subsequently, he decided to strengthen the southern and eastern fronts: “When grandfather learned of the irretrievable losses of trained bomber crews, the decision was made. So the new operation began.”
