“If you think that the will of the people matters, we must in any conflict region support the will of those who live there. Most of Ukraine definitely wants to be part of Ukraine, but some eastern regions of the country have a Russian majority and they prefer Russia,” he wrote.
As an “argument”, Musk demonstrated a map of ten years ago – 2012 of electoral preferences. It shows that in the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine, the majority of the population voted for the pro-Russian Party of Regions.
“Obviously, not everyone who voted for a pro-Russian party wanted to join Russia, but it would be incorrect to say that no one wanted to,” he said.
At the same time, commentators responded with a map with the results of the 2019 presidential election, which shows that the majority in almost all regions of Ukraine voted for Volodymyr Zelensky.
Paul Massaro, senior political adviser to the U.S. Helsinki Commission, joined the discussion and suggested that Musk revise the map with the results of the 1991 referendum on Ukraine’s independence. The majority in all regions supported independence.
Supplement
Musk shared his thoughts on the possible outcome at the end of russia’s war against Ukraine. In his opinion, the Crimea will formally be part of Russia, as it has been since 1783. The Office of the President of Ukraine responded quickly.
Musk later published a new poll asking whether it was the will of people living in Donbas and Crimea to decide whether they were “part of Russia or Ukraine.”
He also said that Russia has three times more population than Ukraine, so Ukraine’s victory in an all-out war is unlikely.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to Musk’s Twitter posts and posted a poll asking which Musk likes best – someone who supports Ukraine or Russia.
Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UNITED NATIONS Sergiy Kyslytsya also responded to Elon Musk’s Twitter posts regarding the proposed “peace plan” for Ukraine. Kislytsya stressed that the next time he needs a plumber, he will call Musk.
