“The responsibility for holding a bilateral meeting or bilateral visit lies with the Member State because it is something that Member States can decide for themselves. But the European Union is very clear that it makes no sense to interact with Russia at the highest political level, when it demonstrates by all possible means that it is only interested in further escalation of illegal aggression against Ukraine. We saw the last demonstration of this yesterday,” Stano said, commenting on Peter Szijjártó’s upcoming visit to Moscow.
“If the Hungarian Foreign Minister goes to Moscow to discuss, as they say, the issue of Hungarian national interests, then when it comes to energy, this, as I said, is within the responsibility of the EU member states, or, ultimately, the EU member states should take responsibility for who they meet and where they are going,” he said.

According to the spokesperson of the European Commission, the EU’s position is that it makes no sense to interact with Russia at a time when it “so openly ignores and rejects all civilized norms of a world based on rules, violates the UN Charter, violates international law, commits atrocities, terrible atrocities in Ukraine, indiscriminately bombards the civilian population, which is tantamount to a war crime, which is completely contrary to international humanitarian law.”
