Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu called for a ceasefire in Ukraine just days before the meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin .
Details
“Unfortunately, (both sides) quickly moved away from diplomacy” after talks between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in Istanbul in March, Çavuşoğlu said in a tv interview quoted by AFP.
The situation is “getting worse and more complicated” as the war drags on, he said.
“A ceasefire must be established as soon as possible. The sooner the better,” the minister said.
He called for a “just peace” based on Ukraine’s territorial integrity, adding: “A process must begin that will ensure ukraine’s border and territorial integrity. Without a ceasefire, it is impossible to have a healthy conversation about these issues: a viable ceasefire and a just peace.”
Erdogan and Putin are expected to meet Thursday in Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana, to discuss Ukraine and bilateral relations, the Kremlin confirmed earlier.
Recall
Adviser to the Turkish President Ibrahim Kalin said in an interview with CNN that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin wants to make a “new big deal” with Western countries, which will partly concern Ukraine.
