In today’s world with a well-developed tourism sector and almost general access to the Internet, it is very difficult to surprise someone with little-known products. However, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, there are rare, forgotten types of vegetables and fruits that many of us have never heard of.
They are forgotten for various reasons: trends and tastes change, which crops are difficult to grow, and not enough resources are allocated for others. At the same time, some of the rare fruits and vegetables are much better adapted to the conditions in a particular country or region than other varieties, they contain a large amount of vitamins and nutrients and can become a healthy addition to the diet of the population.
In addition, rare crops have high commercial potential and, if an appropriate market is found for them, can become a source of income for small farms.
Against the background of the rapid growth of the world’s population, FAO experts note the need to use all available food resources. The upcoming year 2021 was declared the International Year of Fruit and Vegetables in the organization. It will be dedicated to spreading information about their nutritional value and promoting healthy lifestyles.
