The UN General Assembly’s support for a draft resolution condemning Russia’s attempt to annex four Ukrainian regions means that Russia is isolated in its vision of changing Ukraine’s borders. Consequently, attempts to apply radical measures in response to the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be recognized by the world as groundless.

“The significance of the resolution is that most countries in the world have expressed a clear position that they do not recognize Russia’s annexation of four Ukrainian regions and borders outlined by Russia. As for the practical consequences, Russia said that it had annexed the Ukrainian regions and any military actions by Ukraine to reconquer these territories would be regarded as an attack, in fact, on the Russian Federation. The resolution shows that apart from Russia itself and four other states, no one considers these territories to be a Russian federation. That is, Russia is, in fact, isolated with its vision. So, if she tries to use some radical steps to stop the Ukrainian offensive, now his appeals to the fact that this is Russian territory, from the point of view of the international context, turn out to be groundless,” Volia said.
Details
If we analyze who supported Russia, the same countries that voted against the UN resolution condemning the Russian war and calling for the withdrawal of troops from Ukraine within the borders as of 1991. These are Belarus, Nicaragua, Syria and North Korea.
“That is, Russia has not added allies. Again, 35 states abstained from voting, but this does not mean that they recognized the aggression, they simply abstained. Russian propaganda is trying to prove that Ukraine is not supported by the largest countries in the world, such as India and China. But in fact, this is manipulation, because they do not support Russia. The position of states such as Iran, which provided Russia with components for drones, also looks interesting. It seems to be allies. But Iran has decided to move away from expressing any position because of its difficult relationship with the West. They do not want additional sanctions to be imposed against them for these drones. Perhaps they are counting on easing sanctions in order to sell more oil to the world market,” Volia said.
Also interesting, according to the political scientist, is the position of Venezuela, which in the world is considered an ally of Russia on a par with Belarus. It, like Iran, can count on easing sanctions to increase oil exports.
“If we talk about the CSTO, then everyone, except for Russia and Belarus, abstained from voting. For example, Kazakhstan, which did not vote. In fact, the country’s position was previously voiced by Tokayev, who, right in putin’s eyes, said that Kazakhstan does not recognize the “l/dnr”. That is, this means that if Kazakhstan did not want to recognize the independence of pseudo-republics, it definitely does not recognize the annexation – a more radical step on the part of Russia to change Ukraine’s borders,” the political scientist said.
