The catch of snow crabs in Alaska has now been canceled after billions of these crustaceans have disappeared from the waters of the Bering Sea in recent years.
Details
Last week, the Alaska Fisheries Council and the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council announced that the snow crab population in the Bering Sea had fallen below the regulatory threshold for the discovery of fishing.
According to Benjamin Daley, a researcher from the Alaska Department of Fisheries and Game, the snow crab population has declined from about 8 billion in 2018 to 1 billion in 2021.
“Snow crab is by far the most common of all Bering Sea crab species that are caught for commercial purposes,” Daley said in an interview with CNN.
“Therefore, it is worth noting the shock and awe that the population has lost many billions of individuals – and this includes all females and infants,” he added.
According to experts, the disappearance of crustaceans leads not so much to their capture as climate change. Snow crabs are found in cold water and, due to warming, can disappear from the waters around Alaska.
Recall
Scientists have long determined that global warming has a negative impact on coral reefs, and recent research has shown that climate change will cause great damage to the ocean, which will cause consequences for nature and humanity.
