President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Serhiy Popko head of the Kyiv City Military Administration instead of Mykola Zhirnov. The relevant decrees are published on the website of the head of state .

“President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed Decree No. 733/2022 on the appointment of Serhiy Popko as head of the Kyiv City Military Administration. In this position, he replaced Nikolai Zhirnov. The Head of State expressed confidence that the combat experience of Serhiy Popko would help strengthen the defense and security of the capital,” the president’s website says.

Colonel-General Sergey Popko was born in 1961 in Kiev. In 1982, he graduated from the Kiev Higher Combined Arms Command School.
He served as a platoon commander, battalion, unit commander, chief of staff of a mechanized division. After graduating from the National Defense Academy of Ukraine in 2002, where he was trained at the operational-strategic level, he served in senior positions.
Popko was also in the service of the Republic of Iraq. In 2016-2019, he held the position of Commander of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
