The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine asks law enforcement agencies to open a case against Maria Lvova-Belova, the Commissioner for Children’s Rights under the President of the Russian Federation, who claimed the “adoption” of a Ukrainian child abducted from Mariupol.

“The removal of Ukrainian children from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia and their subsequent adoption by Russian citizens grossly violate the legislation of Ukraine, as well as the Geneva Convention for the Protection of Civilians during the War of 1949, which provides for the obligation of the occupying power not to change the civil status of children, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child of 1989,” the Foreign Ministry stressed.

It is reported that on behalf of Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, the agency initiates before the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine the opening of a case against Lviv-Belova, whose actions show signs of a criminal offense.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the international community to strongly condemn the ongoing crimes committed by Russia and its officials against children in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories.

In early October, Polish children’s rights spokesman Mikolaj Pavliak called Russia’s abduction of Ukrainian children one of the war crimes for which it must be tried in a special international tribunal.
