“Consideration of applications for the extension of the validity of passports in the consular offices of Ukraine is planned to be resumed. This will allow Ukrainians abroad, whose passports are expiring, to extend them for free,” the ministry said.
The essence of the problem
According to the agency, yesterday – October 28 – consular offices of Ukraine stopped consideration of applications for extending the validity of passports and entering information about children into them. The reason was the approved amendments to the Temporary Procedure for entering information into the passport of a citizen of Ukraine for traveling abroad.
The temporary procedure allowed to apply for an extension of the passport to the territorial body / territorial division of the State Migration Service of Ukraine, embassy or consular office of Ukraine, at the place of application.
The changes limited this possibility. According to them, the Temporary Procedure began to be applied by embassies or consulates of Ukraine only if these institutions did not have the technical possibility of issuing, exchanging and issuing a passport.
Since the mentioned technical capabilities exist in embassies and consulates, the acceptance of applications for the extension of the validity of foreign passports or entering information about children into them was suspended. Citizens are invited to draw up a new document.
“But the payment of such registration to many Ukrainians who were forced to evacuate abroad is unbearable. At the same time, without a valid passport, a person is not entitled to either a residence allowance, employment, or opening a bank account,” the Ministry of Reintegration noted.
Resolution of the issue
The initiative to resume the procedure for the extension of foreign passports by consular posts of Ukraine, as reported, was supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the State Migration Service and the Ministry of Reintegration during a meeting of the Coordination Headquarters for the return of citizens from the TOT and third countries to Ukraine. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk.
“Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is preparing a draft of the relevant resolution, which should be approved in the near future,” the ministry said.
