Details
Cruz showed no emotion when District Judge Elizabeth Scherer announced her life sentence. Some parents and other family members of the murdered were crying as she spoke. When the judge finished the speech and Cruz was led out of the courtroom, one father said, “It’s good that we got rid of it.” Then they all hugged.
As noted, on Oct. 13, a jury voted 9 to 3 to sentence him to death, but Florida law requires unanimity to reach a sentencing.
Last year, 23-year-old Nicholas Cruz pleaded guilty to killing 17 people: “I am very sorry about what I did and I have to put up with it every day. If I had a second chance, I would do everything in my power to help others,” the shooter said, addressing the judge and the families of the victims.
