“Near the Ukrainian station “Academician Vernadsky” a new snow record. The snow level has already reached 345 cm, which is almost half a meter more than last year’s maximum. And this despite the fact that the 3 meters recorded in December 2021 were also record: they exceeded the figure of 2.65 m in 2016,” the message says.

It is reported that usually the maximum annual height of snow cover near the station was no more than 2 meters.
“Now it has poured almost 3.5 m, while some drifts near Vernadsky reach 6 meters, and there are up to 10 on our island,” the message says.
Scientists predict that the level of snow will still increase, because the current winter in our area has become abnormally warm: the average temperature was only slightly below -2 ° C.
“Due to the warm winter, more moisture is retained in the atmosphere, which leads to more intense precipitation. This is one of the reasons why there is snow accumulation on our island. In fact, this is how the ice sheet is formed and grows,” the researcher explained.
So what will be the final snow record this year, they will find out at the end of December.
