“It is impossible to restore the operation of some substations during such a time, because we are talking about equipment that needs to be ordered, and it takes a very long time to wait for production. But Zhytomyr lives. We have reduced the production of electric vehicles by three times. We turn on the lighting in the city only at 30% of the power, that is, in principle, every third lantern works. We and regional power distribution companies clearly regulate the evening and morning peaks. For example, we reduce the supply of water to sewage treatment plants in the daytime in order to reduce energy consumption, and start it after the peaks have passed. This does not affect the water supply in the city,” Sukhomlyn said.

He added that some of the city’s industrial enterprises, which consume a lot of electricity, have switched to work at night and on weekends. Also, in different districts of Zhytomyr, the light is turned off according to the schedule for several hours.
“At an extraordinary session of the city council, we allocated funds for the purchase of high-capacity generators in order to ensure the operation of the water utility and district heating companies. In the case of a critical situation, when for some time there may be no electricity in the city, these enterprises will be able to supply water and heat to the homes of Zhytomyr residents. Of course, not around the clock, but 5-8 hours a day,” Sukhomlyn said.
In the event of an emergency, schools and kindergartens of the city will work as heating points. In Zhytomyr, it is planned to equip 36 such points, each of which will be provided with a generator.
