The Russians perceived the statement about the alleged withdrawal from the right bank of the Kherson region with aggression and indignation, and first of all these emotions are aimed at the very top of the power of the Russian Federation, including Putin.

“I analyzed what is published on social networks in Russia, and now there are interesting points that I think may have a trend. The first thing you need to pay attention to is that the news of leaving Kherson caused a great wave of indignation, anger, and almost for the first time this indignation is focused on the authorities: Lavrov, Zakharov and even Putin himself. Almost for the first time, such a reaction is widespread. It contains not only anger, but also accusations of incompetence, deception, and, most importantly, weakness. This is already based on the traditional Russian mentality, where there is a fear of being weak,” Kim said.
The second point that the psychologist drew attention to is the shift in the focus of attention from the West and Ukraine and the orientation towards one’s own power. That is, the conflict has moved into a phase of internal accusations.
“Also, the manifestation of the negation reaction is gradually decreasing. If earlier the Russians said that this is a “cunning plan”, “everything goes according to the SVO plan”, “in fact, this is an attempt to lure Ukrainians into a trap”, now such things, although they are found, have become much smaller. It can be assumed that the Russians gradually open their eyes and see reality. The reaction of denial decreases, and the reactions of anger and bargaining increase. This indicates that they are living stage after stage emotional grief, which they felt even after the failure of the plan near Kiev. That is, this issue did not even begin in Kherson. There is a layer of commentators who are focused on predicting the future. Now you can see comments with questions: “now change the constitution again, because according to the Russian constitution, Kherson is considered a Russian city?”, “what kind of Russian city will we take after that?”, and where will Ukrainians stop?”. That is, such defeats, as the Russians are now experiencing near Kherson, lead to the fact that aggression within society is accumulating, the authority of the Russian authorities is rapidly decreasing, disappointment is growing, and the Russians are gradually moving from denial to acceptance of reality in the phases of working out grief,” Kim said.
However, according to the expert, we should not be deceived about this, because the aggression aimed at Ukrainians does not disappear. Despite the fact that we have temporarily fallen out of the focus of attention of Russian society, there is a fairly large stratum of people trying to restore their attitude to Russian greatness. Such people do not imagine Russia small or weak and will grab the last opportunity to harm Ukrainians.
As to whether sentiments within Russian society will affect the steadfastness of Putin’s dictatorial regime, the psychologist believes that this is not enough so far. Such sentiments will not be able to shake up the regime.
“It takes a little more than frustration and anger for him to loosen. The key factor will not be a specific emotion, but a change in attitude. When the process of destruction begins, when new faults appear, which will carry both economic and socio-cultural character within Russian society, then the loosening will go on a full scale. Now we are still seeing a temporary brief emotional reaction. They will argue, shout, maybe something new will start, but the regime itself will not fall from it,” Kim said.
