Pope Francis on Wednesday condemned the latest wave of Russian rocket attacks on Ukraine. He called for a ceasefire to prevent the risk of escalation of the conflict and asked God to “hurry” to end the war.

The pontiff spoke at a general audience in St. Peter’s Square. He did not mention the fall of a rocket in the Polish village of Przevodov near the Ukrainian border during the Russian shelling of Ukraine on November 15.

“I learned with pain and concern about a new and even more brutal missile attack on Ukraine that caused deaths and damage to much of civilian infrastructure. Let us pray that the Lord will convert the hearts of those who still bet on war and that the desire for peace reigns in martyrdom Ukraine in order to avoid escalation and open the way to a ceasefire and dialogue,” he said.
A few minutes later, in other comments about Ukraine, the Pope added, “We can pray for Ukraine, saying if you will, ‘Hurry up, Lord.’
