“From my tourist experience, as well as living for several weeks at the beginning of the war in Bucha in the basement without communications, I can say that the main thing is to move. Because any warm clothes, blankets and sleeping bags are preserved, not given heat. You create warmth yourself. Therefore, you need to move, walk, do exercises, in an apartment building you can climb the stairs. It can be physically difficult or lazy, but it helps the body warm up. Tourists know well that if it is cold, then you need to chop firewood, and it gets better. It is also mandatory to go to bed after charging, if there are no heating options,” Krimer said.
Also an important role in the preservation of heat is played by multi-layered clothing. Several layers of thin things will warm better than one thick thing, due to the larger number of air layers that retain heat better. Usually the bottom layer is thermal underwear, on top of which you can wear warm clothes made of fleece, fluff, wool.
“During sleep, a person is inactive, and therefore there is a loss of heat. Tourists sleep in sleeping bags that do not allow heat to be lost quickly. Similarly, at home, you can wrap yourself in blankets and make sure that the heat around you is not lost, but maintained. Under the blanket you can take an additional source. For example, boil water, pour just into a bottle and throw it under your feet. Other people or animals are a source of heat, that is, sleeping together is warmer than sleeping separately,” Krimer advises.
The expert notes that it is important to warm the legs, because they quickly freeze, and due to this the body loses heat. To do this, you can wear several socks. However, if the boots do not allow this, you can externally warm them with a cloth, for example, fleece. But polyethylene is better not to warm the legs, otherwise a greenhouse effect is created, the legs sweat and freeze from their own moisture.
“As for artificial heat sources. There is an option to heat the stones and take them to the house, but this is energy-intensive and labor-intensive, it is desirable that the stone be large. There are a lot of risks here, so I would not advise. You also have to be careful with the fire in the room. For example, with stoves. The metal structure heats up quickly and fires can occur. Secondly, combustion products, primarily carbon monoxide, can poison. Therefore, it is necessary that there is ventilation, and it is difficult to do this in the apartment. There are gas lamps that can heat a small space on a gas cylinder. But again, this is open fire and ventilation is needed. There are disposable chemical-based heating pads where you can pour some water, a chemical reaction occurs and heat is generated. Dry rations work like that. But, as for me, it is more efficient and cheaper to move. You can’t attack a lot of such things, and if we talk about the lack of heating for a day, then such heating pads are unlikely to help,” Krimer said.
The expert added that a thermos is really useful. So, if it’s not there, it’s worth thinking about buying. In this way, boiling water can be stored for a long period of time and drink hot liquid and warm up from the inside.
