A Treasury Department spokesman said Wednesday that the ministry complied with the Supreme Court’s order last week, rejecting Trump’s emergency appeal to halt the transfer, effectively ending his years-long opposition to the effort.
The news that the department had removed barriers to tax returns was first reported to CNN. The Hill has reached out to the House Budget and Finance Committee for comment.
Democrats in the House of Representatives argued they needed to investigate the IRS’ presidential checks, but Trump’s lawyers repeatedly pushed them away and suggested the request was purely political.

In 2016, Trump broke the tradition of presidential candidates disclosing their tax returns, which are kept secret unless the citizen himself publishes them, or if lawmakers do not request documents.
This secrecy gave rise to a request from the Budget Committee, led by Chairman Richard Neal, Massachusetts, to provide Trump’s personal tax returns from 2013 to 2018 and the returns of eight businesses under his control. The former president argued that the request was unconstitutional.
A Trump-appointed federal trial judge initially dismissed Trump’s lawsuit late last year, and that decision was later upheld by a federal appeals court based in the District of Columbia before the former president asked the Supreme Court to intervene.
Chief Justice John Roberts earlier this month temporarily blocked the publication of Trump’s tax returns so that the court could fully consider the matter, and without much disagreement, the judges rejected Trump’s Nov. 22 appeal .
