“There are three different models of what ending the war through negotiations might look like, each with supporters in the administration. One of them, part of a peace plan proposed by Zelensky last month, includes Russia leaving the entire territory of Ukraine it occupies, including Crimea and areas of eastern Donbas it seized in 2014. The other is the departure to the lines in 2014. The third level of exit will include Donbas, but not Crimea,” the message says.
It is reported that Zelenskyy made it clear that he would not support the last two options, noting that peace could come only when the Russian occupiers retreated from the entire occupied territory.
“But at their in-person meeting on Wednesday, Biden asked about ‘Zelensky’s current thoughts on what this should look like,'” a senior official said.
But he clarified that “at this point, this is a kind of academic discussion” because there is no indication that Russia is interested in talking.
Supplement
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke at the summit of G20 leaders and presented a vision of the path to peace.
Any agreement with the Russian Federation equals an agreement with the “devil” and only scales the appetites of dictator Vladimir Putin, said Adviser to the Head of the President’s Office Mikhail Podolyak, adding that agreements with Russia, “bad peace” at the expense of Ukraine’s territories, will significantly increase Russian aggressiveness and multiply new conflicts around the world.
