At the same time, a Pentagon spokeswoman noted that, according to estimates, Russian forces are in dire need of rest, “but the short period of time of this truce is not consistent” with the need.
“So, again, this is Putin’s statement that we should be skeptical about. This is the same man who said he would not invade Ukraine,” she said.
Supplement
Putin instructed Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to impose a ceasefire in Ukraine from January 6 to 7. Shoigu announced an instruction to allegedly introduce a ceasefire on the line of hostilities between the parties in Ukraine from 12:00 on January 6 for 36 hours.
Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) write that Putin has been criticized in Russia for declaring a so-called Christmas “truce.”
