Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba stated that the deportation of Ukrainian children and their subsequent adoption by Russian families is genocide of the Ukrainian people.

“The deportation of Ukrainian children and their transfer to Russian foster families for illegal adoption is part of the Russian genocide of Ukrainians. Russian officials must be brought to justice for their crimes,” he wrote.

To Kuleba’s post, he added a video from “United 24”, in which Kateryna Rashevska, a lawyer at the Regional Center for Human Rights, said that the Russian Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova is responsible for the genocide of the Ukrainian people. She was appointed to this position by the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, in 2021.
As the expert explains, according to the Rome Statute of the ICC, the forcible transfer of children of representatives of a national group to another group is considered genocide. Rashevska gave the example of the adoption of 16-year-old Philip from Mariupol by Lvova-Bilova.
“On August 14, she wrote that she adopted a 16-year-old boy from Mariupol. She wrote about him, I quote, that he misses his home, friends, his hometown Mariupol. He was not used to living in a large family, was not familiar with the traditions of the Russian Orthodox Church “I haven’t watched Russian films and haven’t read Russian books,” she said.
Later, the ombudsman of the Russian Federation published a photo and reported that Philip received a passport of a Russian citizen, the human rights activist informed.
“This is exactly what the destruction of a national group looks like. It’s not just about citizenship. It’s about culture, mentality, it’s about self-identification,” she noted.
