The European Union has ratified an additional 500 million euros in military aid to Ukraine as Berlin faces increased pressure over calls from Kyiv to supply German-made Leopard tanks. This was reported to Reuters by sources .
Details
EU foreign ministers reached an agreement on a seventh such tranche of aid during a meeting in Brussels after Western countries failed to agree on the provision of battle tanks to Ukraine last week. Sources said a €500 million package was approved, along with an additional €45 million for “non-lethal equipment” for an EU military training mission for Ukraine.
The ministers were expected to discuss, but not decide on, the use of Russian assets frozen in Europe to help rebuild Ukraine, as well as the 10th round of sanctions against Russia, which will come into force next month. Hungary, which actively opposes the Russian Federation in the EU, approved a 500 million tranche, but signaled its position on tougher sanctions, especially if they limit Budapest’s cooperation with Moscow in nuclear energy.
“All decisions that can prolong the war or lead to a potential escalation are contrary to our interests. Sanctions have been proven to lead Europe into a dead end,” said Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.
Recall
The European Union will continue to support Ukraine and put pressure on Russia to stop its aggression. This was stated by EU diplomat Josep Borrell at the opening of the first meeting of EU foreign ministers this year.
