Western countries, including the United States, should not be completely opposed to the idea of sending troops to Ukraine if conditions there worsen, Finnish Foreign Minister Elena Valtonen said.
She added, “It is important not to rule everything out in the long term, because we never know how serious the situation is. But the Finnish position is clear: We are not sending any forces now and we are not willing to discuss it.” Interview with NatSec Daily.
Valtonen noted that the most important thing now is for Ukraine’s supporters to continue sending aid. As one of the two newest faces of NATO, Finland has been doing its part: it has spent more than 0.6% of Ukraine’s GDP – the United States has allocated about 0.3% to Kiev – and has exceeded the alliance’s GDP spending target of 2%.
“Many European countries can do much more,” she added.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the possibility of sending forces to Ukraine, although some Western leaders do not support this idea.
