Experts have found that the fat content of milk is associated with the length of human telomeres, and hence with the aging process.
Telomeres (end sections of chromosomes) protect chromosomes from damage, but they gradually shorten with age.
The cell loses the ability to divide and after a while dies. U.S. researchers have decided to test whether telomere length can be affected by the fat content of milk consumed.
As it turned out, skim milk can delay biological aging. Telomeres of people who drank milk with a fat content of not more than 1%, shortened more slowly than those who liked fat milk. The study involved 5,834 American adults. The increase in milk fat content by 1% was associated with the shortening of telomeres by 69 pairs of nucleotide bases, which corresponds to additional biological aging for more than four years. Telomeres of people who consumed whole milk (3.2% fat) were shorter by 145 paired bases compared to those who drank skim milk.
