Ex-presidential candidate of Belarus Svitlana Tikhanovskaya suggested renaming the republic in Lithuanian from Baltarusija to Belarusia to avoid associations with Russia. She sent a proposal to Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis.
“Unfortunately, the current official name Baltarusija is perceived as a tracing of the Russian word” Belarus “, which leads to a false association with Russia,” Tikhanovskaya explained.

She pointed out that of all the alternatives proposed by Lithuanian experts, the name Belarusia is the most acceptable. According to Tikhanovskaya, the official name of Belarus in 24 European countries is already close to the Belarusian original, not a copy of the Russian name. The presidential candidate called on Lithuania to follow their example.
Protests erupted in Belarus after the presidential election in early August. According to the CEC, Alexander Lukashenko, who has repeatedly held the post of head of state, won the election by a wide margin. Tikhanovskaya scored a little more than 10%. The Belarusian opposition does not agree with the results and considers them falsified. Most European countries also do not recognize Lukashenko as a legitimate president.
