German police have uncovered one of the world’s largest illegal trading platforms on Darknet, and also detained its probable leader. This was reported by the prosecutor’s office of the German city of Koblenz.
Investigators shut down an illegal site called DarkMarket and shut down its servers on Monday, January 11. The prosecutor’s office clarifies that more than 20 servers were located in Moldova and Ukraine. A 34-year-old Australian man suspected of organizing an illegal playground was detained near the German-Danish border.
“Before closing, DarkMarket was the world’s largest trading platform on Darknet with almost 500,000 users and more than 2,400 sellers. It carried out at least 320 thousand transactions and moved more than 4.65 thousand Bitcoin and 12.8 thousand Monero, the two most popular cryptocurrencies. At the current exchange rate, it is more than 140 million euros , “the statement reads.
Drugs, counterfeit money, stolen credit card data, anonymous SIM cards, malware and more were sold illegally on this site.
In September, law enforcement agencies of the United States and a number of European countries conducted a large-scale special operation, as a result of which they detained 179 alleged criminals selling drugs on Darknet and seized about half a ton of banned substances, more than $ 6.5 million and weapons.
