Halyna Kurylo, the head of the Second Surgical Department of the Lviv City Children’s Hospital said that in Lviv, surgeons performed an unusual operation and saved the baby’s life. The newborn girl had a tumor the size of a third of the baby’s body removed. After the operation, the girl weighed 2.5 kg, while the removed tumor – 1 kg 400 g.
The girl was born with a sacrococcygeal teratoma, which covered the lumbar, pelvic and coccygeal area. It completely deformed the baby’s lower body.
Surgeons operated on the baby two days after birth. Doctors removed the teratoma and performed soft tissue plastic surgery.
“Today the situation is quite satisfactory. The baby is fed breast milk. Pelvic functions are restored. All movements and all functional tests are fully consistent with what we expected for the day of the postoperative period. We expect a pretty good and cosmetic result, “says Halyna Kurylo.
At the children’s hospital where the baby was operated on, they say that this is not the first case of a giant teratoma. Two similar operations were performed last year.
