Scientists from the Medical Center of the University of Freiburg decided to find out what kind of rest is most effective for brain recovery. To do this, they conducted an experiment involving 66 people.
They were divided into three groups. The first watched the video for an hour and played table tennis. The other slept all this time. The latter did nothing, just was in a darkened room without external stimuli, writes Eurekalert.
As a result, it was found that the greatest brain productivity increased in the second group, where participants slept. Scientists explain that this is due to the typical activity of the brain during deep sleep. It, as the experiment showed, performs an important function for the connection of nerve cells.
Researchers have concluded that sleep is more than rest for the brain. “Sleep is essential for brain recovery. It cannot be replaced by rest periods to improve performance. The state of the brain during sleep is unique, ”said Christoph Nissen, a professor at the University of Bern who led the study.
