From January 16, the Ukrainian language becomes the language of customer service in Ukraine as the only state language, except for a separate request of the consumer for service in another language.
Enterprises of all forms of ownership, sole proprietorships and other business entities are obliged to serve customers and provide information about goods and services in the state language, according to Article 30 of the Law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language”, adopted in 2019.
This means that in a supermarket, online store, coffee shop or restaurant, bank, gas station, pharmacy or library, gym or train station – the service must be Ukrainian. Only at the request of the client his personal service can be carried out in another language.

At the same time, absolutely all service employees are obliged to provide the customer with information about goods and services in the state language. Price tags, instructions, technical characteristics, markings, menus, tickets, etc. must be in Ukrainian.
However, we allow the use of abbreviations, acronyms, words in English, letters of the Latin and Greek alphabets. The information may also be duplicated in another language.
Online stores and online catalogs are required to use the state language in the content of sites, duplication in another language is allowed.
In case of violation of the law by the institution or institution, the language ombudsman or his representative draws up an act and announces a warning and a requirement to eliminate the violation within 30 days.
For repeated violations of the law during the year, the institution is fined from 300 to 400 non-taxable minimum incomes, ie from 5,100 to 6,800 hryvnias.
The Ombudsman may, if necessary, involve police officers or employees of state and local authorities. However, fines will begin on July 16, 2022.
