It is known that defense of the Donetsk airport lasted 242 days: from May 26, 2014 to January 22, 2015. For 242 days, the Ukrainian military, volunteers, medics, and volunteers resisted the onslaught of Russian occupation forces and pro-Russian militants, fiercely defending a tiny piece of Ukrainian land.
Fighting for Donetsk airport began on May 26, 2014, when pro-Russian separatists and Chechen militants seized the airport’s then-peaceful Donetsk building. On the same day, Ukrainian security forces, thanks to the coordinated actions of the Ukrainian Air Force and highly mobile airborne troops, struck at terrorist positions and established control over the Donetsk airfield. Later there was a complete destabilization of the city of Donetsk, the beginning of the occupation and endless attempts of the enemy to take control of the airport, but our soldiers did not surrender their positions and, even under heavy fire, kept the defense.
January 2015 saw the bloodiest and fiercest battles. On January 13, as a result of constant massive tank and artillery shelling by militants, the control tower collapsed, the image of which became a symbol of the airport’s defense. Then the fighting took place on the floors of the new terminal. On January 18-20, the Ukrainian military held the ground floor, and the basement and upper floors were controlled by the enemy. The militants, using the truce to evacuate their dead and wounded, mined the ceiling of the building and blew them up. These days, as a result of the explosion of the terminal, 58 defenders-cyborgs who defended this bridgehead to the last drop of blood were lost. In total, according to official data, about 100 servicemen were killed while defending the Donetsk airport.
At various times in the airport and the nearby village of Sands fought special forces of the 3rd separate regiment, fighters 79, 80, 81, 95 separate airmobile and 93 separate mechanized brigades, 57 separate motorized infantry brigade, 90th separate airmobile and 74th separate reconnaissance battalion, soldiers of the Dnipro-1 regiment, soldiers of the Ukrainian Volunteer Corps (DUK) and many others. Many of them were awarded state awards, some of them posthumously.
On January 20, 2015, pro-Russian militants, without ceasing to storm, blew up a new terminal at Donetsk airport, permanently turning one of the country’s largest airports into ruins. After that, the military leadership decided to withdraw the Ukrainian fighters, and on January 22, the last surviving defenders left the destroyed terminal.
According to the regional administration in Lviv region is home to 51 soldiers (data as of 2019), who defended the Donetsk airport. But in fact there are many more, because not everyone advertises it and not everyone is ready to talk about these events.
