Constipation is often the result of poor nutrition and unhealthy habits. People may experience it after eating certain foods, but some suffer from chronic constipation. People who experience chronic constipation usually have less than three bowel movements per week. In any case, difficulty with bowel movements can cause discomfort and irritation. The situation may worsen if you eat food and drinks that aggravate constipation.
Here are three drinks that can cause or worsen constipation:
Alcohol. Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to a number of health problems, and constipation is one of them. Alcohol affects our body in several ways. First, it dehydrates, and our body needs water to empty its bowels. Second, beverages that contain large amounts of alcohol can affect the body’s internal function. They can slow down the peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract, which causes difficulties in the intestines. Third, it can cause overgrowth of harmful intestinal bacteria, which is often the cause of bloating and constipation.
Alcohol can also cause inflammation in the lining of the intestines, which can lead to other stomach problems. Whether or not alcohol causes constipation actually depends on the amount and type of alcohol you drink. But in any case, do not forget to drink plenty of water after drinking alcohol.
Milk. Everyone knows that milk is good for health. It contains nutrients such as protein, calcium and vitamin B12, but in some cases it can cause your digestive problems.
If you already have indigestion, milk can make the situation worse. Children should be especially careful because they are sensitive to a protein called cozeins in cow’s milk. It can interact with intestinal bacteria if you suffer from lactose intolerance. Then after eating dairy products, diarrhea or vomiting may occur. And these symptoms can also lead to dehydration, which is a major cause of constipation.
Coffee. For some people, coffee helps to empty the bowels, while for others it can cause bloating or constipation. The caffeine in coffee can stimulate the intestines to contract, making it easier to empty. However, coffee has a diuretic effect, which leads to fluid loss and constipation. If you already suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, it can make the situation worse. To avoid this, try switching to decaffeinated coffee.
