The authorities of the capital of the Netherlands have thought about radically changing the city center. Officials believe that Amsterdam should become a convenient place for citizens, not just a tourist attraction.
The idea to transform the central part of the city is connected with the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam, which will be celebrated in 2025. To implement such an ambitious plan, the mayor’s office is going to buy the buildings in the center, which now open small souvenir shops, cheap hotels, and coffee shops (establishments with a permit to sell soft drugs from cannabis).
According to Europulse, in the near future, the mayor’s office will conduct a study, as a result of which it will be decided what exactly will appear in each of these houses. This may be housing, cultural centers, and need residents, not tourists, shops.
The second task of the mayor’s office is that may be required to open later or even remove from the center, thus directing the flow of guests to another specially designated place.
Finally, Amsterdam wants to return the floating flower market to the citizens. In recent years, locals have stopped going there due to rising prices and many tourists.
The capital of the Netherlands began to fight crowds of guests a few years ago. For example, in 2018 it was decided to ban guests from renting accommodation in three central districts of the city (the new rules came into force last year).
