Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has decided to resign. On Tuesday, January 26, he will announce his resignation at a meeting of the Council of Ministers and submit a statement to the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella.
The decision was made in order to resolve the political crisis in the country after the ruling coalition lost an absolute majority in the Senate due to the withdrawal of the “Living Italy” party of former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.
According to Reuters, citing an unnamed government official, Conte expects to receive a new mandate from the president to form a government with broader support in parliament. Other members of the ruling coalition, the 5 Star Movement and the Democratic Party, have expressed support for Conte.
Giuseppe Conte has headed the Italian government since June 2018.
