In the movie “Spencer” by Pablo Larrain, actress Kristen Stewart will play Princess Diana. In the first frame, you can see that Kristen Stewart and the film crew have done a great job of transforming. When does filming start? Who is working on the script?
The story of Diana, Princess of Wales – an innovator, activist, and style icon – even 20 years after her death, continues to inspire admiration and interest. Proof of? A brand new film about her life called “Spencer”, on which work has already begun.
Why was Stewart given the lead role in the film?
The main news is that Princess Diana will be played by Kristen Stewart. The American actress rose to fame after filming the Twilight saga (2008-2012) and has since received rave reviews for her work on a number of independent projects, including director’s Sils Maria (2014) and The Personal Shopper (2016). Olivier Assayas. In 2019, she played French new wave icon, Jean Seberg, in the Seberg biopic and starred in a new version of Charlie’s Angels. “Kristen is one of the greatest actresses of today,” Spencer director Pablo Larraine told Deadline. – She can be very mysterious, very fragile, and ultimately very strong, and this is exactly what we need…
Thus, Stewart will join the list of actresses who have played Princess Diana at various times. These are Naomi Watts in Diana (2013), Genevieve O’Reilly in Diana: The Last Days of a Princess (2007), debut Emma Corrin, who played Lady Dee in Netflix’s fourth season of The Crown.
What will the script be about?
Spencer’s screenplay spans three busy days in 1992 when Princess Diana finally decided to file for divorce from Prince Charles. It happened during her actually last Christmas vacation with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk. “This is a very tense moment,” Pablo Larrain comments on the plot in an interview with Deadline. “The family celebrated Christmas there together for many years in a row, and now we understand what Diana wants and what she is up to…”
Larrain adds that the couple’s divorce in 1996 and Diana’s tragic death in 1997 will not be part of the story. “She died years after the story we’ve described unfolds,” he says. “We’re only talking about three days of her life, but in this very short time, you will be able to understand who she really was. We all know her further fate … and there is no point in showing what will happen next.”
The drama will likely focus on Diana’s relationship with Charles and her bond with her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. “The key is how she realizes through the film that she really needs to be who she wants to be,” adds Larrain. “And this does not mean that she should be close to someone, part of something, depend on anyone other than herself and her children. Diana had many wonderful qualities, but above all, she was an excellent mother. This is the story of a woman who understands that the most important thing for her is her children.”
Who will direct and write Spencer?
In the director’s chair – Chilean Pablo Larrain, who became famous thanks to the films “Neruda” and “Jackie”. In the 2016 biopic about Jackie Kennedy, the former first lady of America was played by Natalie Portman. The director’s upcoming project, most likely, will not avoid comparisons with “Jackie”: both feature a public person who is under the scrutiny of the media. And if “Jackie” is indicative of the director’s style, then we will have excellent costumes, magnificent interiors, and a brilliantly embodied script.
As for the script for the biopic “Spencer”, it was written by Oscar nominee Stephen Knight, best known for the creator of the crime drama “Peaky Blinders”. “It’s an energetic and beautiful script,” says Pablo Larrain. “I’ve admired Knight’s work for years. I admire how poetically he describes the power of Princess Diana’s charisma.”
When is the premiere?
The film is expected to be released in the fall of 2021 – and in 2022 it will be 25 years since the death of the princess.
