The 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, has agreed with two lawyers that they will represent him in the impeachment proceedings in the US Senate.
According to him, the team defending the former president included lawyers David Sean and Bruce Castor. According to a statement from Trump’s staff, both lawyers agreed that the impeachment of the former president is contrary to US law.
“I am honored to represent the interests of the 45th President Donald Trump and the United States Constitution,” Sean said in a statement. Castor, in turn, stressed that under the impeachment procedure, “the US Constitution will be tested for strength.”
It became known on Saturday that Trump had stopped working with five lawyers who were developing a defense strategy as part of the impeachment proceedings. Butch Bowers, as well as Deborah Barbier, Johnny Gesser, Greg Harris and Joshua Howard, left Trump’s legal team.
The resolution on Trump’s impeachment was passed by the US House of Representatives on January 13, last Monday, congressmen submitted the document to the Senate. The article of the accusation in the resolution is one – incitement to revolt. The impeachment procedure was initiated due to statements made by Trump on January 6. On that day, supporters of the Republican, who gathered in the US capital for a rally in support of him, stormed Congress, trying to prevent the approval of the results of the November 3 presidential election, which was won by Biden.
The impeachment process itself will begin on February 9. During the meetings, members of the House of Representatives, the so-called impeachment officers, will act as prosecutors, and senators – as jurors. Democrat Senator Patrick Leahy (Vermont) will chair the process.
Democrats in the House of Representatives in the relatively recent past have tried to remove Trump from power by subjecting him to impeachment. This attempt failed when the Senate acquitted the 45th President of the United States in early 2020.
Thus, on December 18, 2019, Donald Trump became the third president of the United States after Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, to whom the House of Representatives has announced impeachment. He was accused of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
