The administration of the new US President Joe Biden is preparing to resume cooperation with the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC). This was reported on Sunday by the Associated Press (AP).
According to agency sources, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will announce within a day that the country will “return to the Geneva-based structure as an observer, intending to seek election as a full member” of the RPL. The agency notes that “this decision is likely to provoke criticism from conservative lawmakers” in the United States, as well as forces that support Israel.
According to the material, the Biden administration believes that the RPL “should be reformed”, and the most effective method to achieve this is to “interact with it, guided by the principles.” According to one source, the RPL is “an important forum for those fighting tyranny and injustice around the world.” The US administration intends to participate in the work of the RPL to “ensure the realization of its full potential,” the publication said.
In 2018, Washington announced its withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council, citing the organization’s prejudice against the United States and Israel. The statement was made after the RPL adopted a number of resolutions condemning the actions of the Jewish state.
