Two Ukrainian artists were nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen International Prize 2022. Writer Halyna Malik and illustrator Kost Lavro were included in the long list of nominees for the award.
“I have no illusions about receiving the award. Ukraine is not one of the countries with a system of promoting modern children’s books. Modern – because the award is awarded only to living writers. But it’s great that the National Section of IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) earned us.
Ukrainian authors have also been nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Award. That is, it is said that Ukraine has begun to enter the international arena in the field of children’s literature.
It’s not just an image for literature. Any attention of the world community to Ukraine will now help us in the war with Russia – even an award in the field of children’s literature, ”says Halyna Malik.
In total, the longlist includes 62 nominees – writers and illustrators – from 33 countries. The shortlist will be published in January 2022. The winners will be announced in April 2022.
The Andersen Prize is one of the most honorable awards in the world for children’s writers and children’s book illustrators. It is also called the “Nobel Prize in Children’s Literature”.
Founded in 1956 on the initiative of the President of the International Committee for Children’s and Youth Literature of UNESCO Ella Lepman. It is awarded not for a single work, but for the author’s creative work.
No Ukrainian has received this award. In 1979, Vsevolod Nestayko was added to the list of honorary awards.
