New animal research shows that eating walnuts reduces the risk of stomach cancer associated with Helicobacter pylori infection, which affects more than half of the world’s population.
The prevalence of H. pylori is highest in developing countries as it is usually linked to socioeconomic status and hygiene conditions. It is spread from person to person or through contaminated food and water. This infection is the leading cause of stomach and small intestine ulcers and stomach cancer. While there are effective treatments for H. pylori today, there are concerns that the bacterium could become significantly more dangerous by developing antibiotic resistance. This is why researchers are exploring alternative, including dietary, approaches to protect against this infection.
For example, in a recent study in a mouse model, Korean researchers at the CHA Cancer Prevention Center found evidence that a diet rich in walnuts can help protect the gastrointestinal tract from the negative effects associated with H. pylori infection. Specifically, research has shown that walnut extracts help create protective proteins and anti-inflammatory compounds in the gut that protect against H. pylori and, as a result, reduce the risk of cancer.
This isn’t the first time that walnuts have been linked to a lower risk of GI cancer. Two other animal studies, published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research and Nutrients, have shown that walnuts can inhibit colon tumor development by altering the gut microbiome, as well as halting the progression of colorectal cancer by suppressing angiogenesis – the development of new blood vessels that facilitate the growth of cancerous cells.
