The former head of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi is forming a new government in Italy. He chooses business leaders and politicians for his team.
Former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said yesterday, February 12, that he was ready to head Italy’s next government, and announced who would join his team. He added that high-ranking business leaders and technocrats will receive key positions.
For example, Vodafone CEO Vittorio Colao will be the Minister for the Transition to Digital Technologies, and Roberto Chingolani of the Titan Leonardo Defense Ministry will head the Ministry for the Transition to Green Technologies.
The Minister of Economy will be the Director of the Bank of Italy Daniele Franco, and the Ministry of Justice will be headed by Marta Cartabia, former head of the Constitutional Court.
The new government will be sworn in on Saturday, February 13, and will receive a vote of confidence in parliament next week.
Draghi was called to form a government of national unity after a center-left coalition led by Giuseppe Conte disbanded after differences over plans to recover from the coronavirus pandemic, and the Italian prime minister himself resigned.
After several days of consultations, Draghi said he would be Italy’s prime minister, representing politicians from across the spectrum, with 15 political appointments and eight technocrats.
