The Sony WH-1000XM2 wireless headphones exploded and burned out while charging. This was due to the fact that they were connected to the home mains using an onboard adapter for the aircraft.

On February 17, 2021, Ms. Liu bought Sony headphones for 2,300 yuan (approximately $ 350). The woman returned home with the purchased device, and at home, her son, trying to charge the headphones, mistakenly used the onboard adapter from the kit instead of the usual charger. As a result, the headset exploded and caught fire. The boy received burns on his right arm.
Ms. Liu tried to file a complaint with a store that sold her headphones, but staff described the situation as improper use of a technically complex device. On this basis, the buyers refused warranty service. After the news was published in the local media, several more messages with similar cases appeared on the Internet among Chinese users.
An on-board socket adapter is required to connect to the aircraft’s multimedia system. Sony warns on its website that the onboard adapter is not designed to charge headphones and can seriously damage them. However, it is easy for an uninformed person to make a mistake, as a conventional power supply and an on-board adapter look quite similar.
