The United States and Canada plan to upgrade their network of defense satellites and radars in the Arctic to counter a growing military presence north of Russia and China.

US President Joe Biden met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and asked to increase Canada’s defense spending. This involves the modernization of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, commonly known as NORAD.
NORAD was central to the US-Canadian Cold War strategy against the former Soviet Union. The surveillance system, consisting of satellites, ground-based radar stations, and air bases based mainly in Alaska and the Canadian Arctic, has been designed to alert allies to any future attack from the north.
But now it is outdated and unable to work with new missiles in Russia and China.
The United States and Canada will coordinate their actions to better compete with China and counter threats to their interests and values.
