In Odessa, more than a thousand civil servants have volunteered to improve the Ukrainian language after the entry into force of a law requiring them to speak the state language while serving citizens.

The first 30 employees were put behind school desks, Ukrainian is taught by three teachers. They told reporters that they came to the lessons on their own initiative, and the management supported them.
At first, the residents of Odessa were encouraged by language interests, and then they moved on to a practical lesson to find out the level of language of each of the students present.
Officials will teach Ukrainian for almost a month, two lessons a week. After training, they will receive special certificates.
Law on Language in Ukraine:
On January 16, a number of provisions of the law on customer service in the Ukrainian language came into force.
According to Art. 30 of the Law “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language”, all service providers, regardless of the form of ownership, must serve consumers and provide information about goods and services in the Ukrainian language. Violation of the language legislation in the field of service is subject to a fine of 5,100 to 6,800 UAH.
This law was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on April 25, 2019, and its articles are introduced in stages.
Penalties for refusing to communicate with customers in Ukrainian will be from July 16, 2022.
