On March 12, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law extending the agreement with the Netherlands on the protection mission of the investigation into the crash of Flight MH17 until August 1. This was reported by the press service of the head of state.
“The agreement of July 28, 2014, established the multinational International Defense Mission to investigate the crash of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 on July 17, 2014. The main mission of the mission is to facilitate the collection of remnants, conduct investigations, and carry out other activities that may be agreed upon between the parties, “the message says.
The agreement was concluded for a period of one year and was extended several times.
Boeing 777, flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on flight MH17, crashed on July 17, 2014, near Torez, Donetsk region. All 298 people on board were killed (citizens of the Netherlands, Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, Great Britain, Germany, Belgium, the Philippines, Canada, and New Zealand).
According to the findings of the international investigation team, flight MH17 was shot down from the Buk complex from the territory controlled by the pro-Russian militants. After the plane crash, the gun was returned to the Russian Federation. Investigators clarified that the Buk had arrived in Donbass from the Kursk region. In May 2018, the Netherlands and Australia formally blamed Russia for the MH17 crash.
On March 9, 2020, the District Court of The Hague began hearing the case of the Malaysian plane crash. There are four accused in the case: “Minister of Defense” of the “DPR” group, Russian citizen Igor Girkin (Strelkov), head of the “GRU DPR”, Russian citizen Sergei Dubinsky (Khmury), his subordinate, Russian citizen Oleg Pulatov (Gyurza), and also a citizen Ukraine, the commander of the reconnaissance battalion of the 2nd section of the “GRU DNR” Leonid Kharchenko (Mole). The case is being considered by the court in The Hague since most of the victims were citizens of the Netherlands.
Pulatov does not admit his guilt. Its defenders have filed numerous motions demanding that the court consider alternative versions of the Malaysian Boeing crash. Girkin and Dubinsky in June 2019 stated that they refused to testify at the trial.
In early November, Pulatov’s lawyers spoke during three days of hearings. The defense of the Russian demanded to re-interrogate experts and witnesses in the MH17 case, as well as to re-examine all the evidence. Most of the requests of Pulatov’s defense were rejected by the court, including the consideration of an alternative version of the disaster. The request for the interrogation of several experts and witnesses who could testify about the Buk and whether Pulatov was involved in its transportation was granted. In addition, the court allowed the lawyers of the relatives of the victims to have access to a digital version of all case materials.
