The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party, won the municipal elections in the German state of Hesse. He received 28.2 percent of the vote, the Federal Statistics Office said on Monday (March 15th). Compared to the election results in 2016, the CDU lost several tenths of a percent.

Second place went to the Social Democratic Party of Germany with 23.3 percent (up from 28.5 percent five years ago). Third is Soyuz-90 / Greens, which improved from 11.3 percent in 2016 to 19.4 percent today. Alternatives for Germany have 8.1 percent, the Free Democratic Party has 6.6 percent, and the Left Party has 4.1 percent.
The elections to the Landtags of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as the municipal elections in Hesse, opened a series of election campaigns scheduled for 2021. The culmination will be on September 26, when elections to the Bundestag, as well as to the Landtags of Berlin, Thuringia, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
In Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, conservatives suffered losses on March 14, reducing their chances of remaining in power in Germany after the September vote.
