Foreign Minister Dmytro Koliba responded to an article in the Washington Post that the Biden administration expects greater efforts from Volodymyr Zelensky to enact reforms and fight corruption.
Kiev. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – March 16, 2021 – Diplomatic Affairs
This came according to a comment made by Dmytro Koliba the European Union in which the Minister of Foreign Affairs wrote.
Undoubtedly, the editorial staff of The Washington newspaper has the right to express their own opinions, just as Ukrainian journalists have the right to express their views.
The growing interest in personal conversations between the Presidents of Ukraine and the United States is natural and understandable, as is the number of conspiracy theories that traditionally accompany such events.”
According to him, it would be “a grave mistake” to limit all Ukrainian-American relations to a single conversation between the leaders of the two countries: “The facts show the systematic development of the dialogue between Ukraine and the United States. I had a telephone conversation with the Secretary of State of the United States in the first weeks of his tenure. Shortly thereafter, the defense ministers of Ukraine and the United States held talks. There is a very broad and meaningful conversation between our two countries on a whole host of issues.”
On the other hand, Kuliba is convinced that after a series of recent decisions by the National Security and Defense Council, it is impossible to accuse the President of Ukraine of hesitating in the fight against corruption, oligarchy, and Russian influence.
The minister stressed that “only last month, Volodymyr Zelensky took steps that others had not even dared to talk about in past years.”
In this context, the minister said, “The signals that we receive from the American side after these decisions are made completely contradict the assumptions of American and Ukrainian journalists. Our partners see them as long-awaited steps that demonstrate the commitment of the Ukrainian leadership to reforms. Therefore, it makes no sense to demand from Ukraine something that it is already doing in its favor without any outside advice.”
Previously, The Washington Post said that the Biden administration expects Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky to make greater efforts in implementing reforms and fighting corruption.
