According to her, it is about Cameron’s lobbying of former colleagues in Whitehall (London Street, where the country’s main government offices are located) in order to obtain financial services from Greensill Capital, a government loan intended for large companies in a coronavirus pandemic. These steps were taken just a few months before the bankruptcy of the company in March of this year.
Under UK law, anyone who promotes the interests of a third party in public authorities for a fee must first register in the official government register of lobbyists. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in a civil penalty – a fine of 7.5 thousand pounds (more than 10 thousand US dollars) or, in case of serious violations – criminal prosecution.
The former head of government reportedly contacted the Treasury directly, including sending several text messages to Finance Minister Rishi Sunako, as well as 10 Downing Street and the Bank of England. Such attempts have been unsuccessful, but have raised questions about equitable access to public funding.
The Office of the Register of Consultant Lobbyists said Wednesday that it was “investigating whether David Cameron was involved in lobbying,” being unregistered as such.
On Monday, an influential group of MPs from the ruling Conservative Party blocked an attempt to conduct a parliamentary inquiry into Cameron’s activities in connection with Greensill Capital. He has worked for the firm as an advisor since 2018.
David Cameron left the post of British Prime Minister on July 13, 2016, after a referendum on Britain’s exit from the EU, in which supporters of Brussels were defeated.
