History of the holiday
The homeland of St. Theophanes, who lived in the 18th-19th centuries, is Constantinople. When the father of little Theophanes died, the emperor Leo of Isauria took the boy into his care. Before marriage, Theophanes agreed with his wife that they would remain chaste because he had long dreamed of becoming a monk.
Hryhoriy Stratihy met shortly after the wedding on Feofan’s life. He not only helped him become a monk but also approved the construction of a convent. The building was built on the island of Kalonim. Theophanes prayed and read church literature all his free time, so the Lord gave him a wonderful gift – to save people from the demons that inhabited them.
Soon Theophanes built another monastery in the Sigrian region. At the age of 50, he contracted an incurable disease. Leo the Armenian, who came to power, resumed the struggle against the symbols of the church. As a result, Theophanes was arrested and his monastery was set on fire. The monk did not stay behind bars for a month, dying in a cell.
Traditions and rites
This holiday is not associated with any special traditions. If a person grew flax or hemp, he left a handful of seeds as a treat for the birds. It is said that the harvest will be rich. On this day, healers always read various conspiracies, accepting people who suffer from nightmares.
The ground on Theophanes thaws and the snow melts. That is why it is necessary to go outside at sunrise to greet the long-awaited spring.
On the day of Theophanes, people are sure to bring horses to the ponds to water them with silver vessels. It is said that an animal sick on this day cannot be cured until late autumn.
