Ukrainian doctor and TV presenter Yevgeny Komarovsky on his Instagram page constantly publish posts about the health of children and adults, in which he talks about diseases, their treatment and gives advice to parents. This information is especially useful for young parents.
He devoted one of the posts to the topic of using cotton swabs when cleaning the ears of babies.
Evgeny Olegovich said that every year, especially among children, there are many cases of damage to the structures of the ear due to the use of cotton swabs to remove the wax accumulated in the ear. Basically, such troubles happen when children under 8 years old use stick on their own. Such “troubles” can result in damage to the eardrum, and even long-term dysfunction of the inner ear.
Komarovsky recalls that the ear canals are self-cleaning and the use of cotton wool to clean them not only pushes the sulfur deeper but is also fraught with various injuries – from weak to serious. Children do not need special ear cleaning. For aesthetic reasons, it is sufficient to gently brush away the wax from the visible part of the ear canal.
To maintain hygiene in the ears, it is enough only once or twice a week, while taking a bath, rinse your ears with a soapy little finger. In this case, you should not stick your finger deeply, just make a couple of rotational movements.
If you suspect that a child has a cerumen plug in the ear, you do not need to take independent action, you should seek qualified medical help.
