According to online sources, Google is developing the MicroDroid platform, which is a “minimal Linux image based on Android.”
The message says that this version of the OS is intended for use in virtual machines and is being developed “as a stripped-down version of the common Android system image GSI (Generic System Image)”.
Since GSI is an open-source base build of Android, it looks like MicroDroid will be an even more stripped-down version. According to reports, the goal of this project is to allow running a minimal version of Android on top of a hypervisor to virtualize individual applications without having to run an additional full desktop environment.
The source suggests that the implementation of this project may be part of a larger effort by Google to implement virtualization on Android devices to improve security. Google is known to be working on implementing a Linux kernel virtualization mechanism on Android devices based on ARM64 processors.
MicroDroid will be a tool for launching small Android virtual machines for testing mobile applications. This approach will provide an isolated environment for working with data, as well as provide the ability to quickly switch between different options for platform assemblies. As a result, users will have a safer and more secure environment without compromising performance levels.
